Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin knew the Russian forest the way other painters knew the human face, and that patient attention to pine, oak and open rye field is what carries his landscape work so well into counted cross stitch.
He was a Russian realist, born in 1831 and died in 1898, and he spent a career doing one thing thoroughly rather than many things lightly. Trees were his subject. Sunlight in a coniferous wood, a felled oak, an apiary tucked among the trunks, the rye standing in summer heat — these are the pictures people remember him for. Shishkin came up during the reign of Tsar Alexander II and was among the founding members of the Peredvizhniki, the group of artists who took Russian painting out to the public rather than waiting for the public to come to it. He studied under Sokrat Vorobyov and Rudolf Koller.
John Constable was a fellow realist who also gave his life to landscape. Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky and Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy worked in the same realist current.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin art prints are easy to find.
