Siemiradzki, Henryk

Henryk Siemiradzki built his reputation on large history paintings, and the scenes inside them carry over to counted cross stitch far better than their scale might suggest.

He was Polish, born in 1843 and died in 1902, and he spent most of his working life in Rome rather than at home. What he returned to again and again were two worlds: the ancient Greco-Roman one, and the stories of the New Testament. He worked in the academic style of his day, having trained under Dmytro Bezperchy, and his paintings ended up in national galleries across Europe. The biblical subjects are the ones most people recognize now, quiet domestic moments set among figures in robes and stone.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Louis-Emile Adan, Ludwig Knaus, Alexandre Cabanel, and Charles Joshua Chaplin.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Henryk Siemiradzki art prints are easy to find.
