Stevens, Alfred

Alfred Stevens built a career on the quiet self-possession of well-dressed women in their own rooms, and that stillness is what carries his paintings so well into counted cross stitch.

He was Belgian, born in 1823 and died in 1906, and he worked in France among the Realists. His first real attention came from a social realist canvas about poor vagrants, but it was the other half of his subject matter that made him famous: upper-middle class Parisian life, painted with the patient finish of the 17th-century Dutch interiors he admired. The portraits are what he is remembered for now, unhurried and closely observed.

Stevens studied under Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres and took much of his approach from Johannes Vermeer. Gustave Courbet and Jean Baptiste Camille Corot belonged to the same French Realist circle.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Alfred Stevens art prints are easy to find.
