Marianne Stokes painted subjects like Death and the Maiden and the old romance of Aucassin and Nicolette, figure work with a stillness to it that carries over unusually well into counted cross stitch.
She was Austrian, born in 1855 and died in 1927, and her life took its decisive turn at Pont-Aven, where she met the English landscape painter Adrian Scott Stokes. She married him and settled in England, and it was there that she built the reputation that mattered: she was reckoned one of the leading women artists in Victorian England, at a time when that sentence was not easily earned. Her name sits with the storytelling painters of the period rather than the landscapists her husband belonged to.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones and John Everett Millais.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Marianne Stokes art prints are easy to find.
