Tayler, Albert Chevallier

Albert Chevallier Tayler was a portrait painter who also carried his easel outdoors with the Newlyn School, and that mix of studied faces and open air gives his work an honesty that suits counted cross stitch.

He was an English artist, born in 1862 and died in 1925. His training was thorough by the standards of his day: Heatherley's School of Art, then the Royal Academy Schools, then Paris, where he worked alongside avant-garde painters and picked up the plein air habits that shaped the Newlyn men. Before any of that he was a schoolboy at Bloxham in Oxfordshire. Portraits and genre scenes were his working ground, the sort of pictures that ask a viewer to look at a person rather than a performance.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Alex de Andreis, Carl Heinrich Bloch, and Henri Lehmann.
