Trained under Hippolyte Flandrin and Louis Lamothe, he became known for genre scenes of Victorian and Belle Époque society, though his interests ranged far wider than the drawing room. He worked as a caricaturist for Vanity Fair under the name Coïdé, absorbed Japanese design, and devoted his later years to biblical subjects. Cranach, Bellini, Carpaccio, and Holbein all left their mark on him.
Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky, Raimundo Madrazo y Garreta, Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy, and John Constable worked in the same realist tradition.
