Tornai, Gyula

Gyula Tornai made his name in the Orientalist genre, and that appetite for detail is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.

He was Hungarian, born in 1861 and died in 1928, and he worked in the academic tradition that dominated the serious painting of his day. Orientalist subjects were where he found his footing, and they are what his name is still attached to. His paintings hang in the Hungarian National Gallery, which has kept him in view at home even though he is not a name the general art histories say a great deal about.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Philip Hermogenes Calderon, Albert Lynch, Conrad Kiesel, and Edward Mason Eggleston.
