Toulmouche, Auguste

Auguste Toulmouche built a career on the quiet hours of well-off Parisian women, and the stillness of those rooms is what carries his work so comfortably into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1829 and died in 1890, and he trained under Charles Gleyre. His subject was genre painting of a very particular kind: the upper middle class at home, women surrounded by the comforts of a luxurious interior, caught reading or waiting or simply thinking. There is no drama in these pictures and none was wanted. What Toulmouche is remembered for is the attention he gave to fabric, furnishing and the small business of a domestic afternoon, painted with enough care that the clothes alone tell you who these women were.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Charles Landelle, George Frederick Watts, and John White Alexander.
