Vastagh, Gyorgy

Gyorgy Vastagh spent most of his working life shaping monuments in bronze and stone, so it is a small surprise that the pieces stitchers keep asking for are his quieter figure subjects, now charted for counted cross stitch.

He was Hungarian, born in 1868 and died in 1946, and he worked in traditional Romantic and Classical styles. Memorials and public monuments made up the bulk of his output, the sort of commissions that fix a sculptor's name to a city rather than to a gallery wall. He also had a real feeling for animals, and his sculptures of them are among the works he is still remembered for. Alongside all that sit a handful of portraits, including a girl in a white dress with a blue sash from 1883, and the genre scene Pastimes.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Ludwig Knaus, Albert Lynch, Georges Jules Victor Clairin, and Wladyslaw Czachorski.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Gyorgy Vastagh art prints are easy to find.
