Wagrez, Jacques Clement

Jacques Clement Wagrez is remembered above all for The Judgement of Paris, a mythological scene that still turns up on walls everywhere and takes to counted cross stitch remarkably well.

He was French, born in 1850 and died in 1908, and he is not a name the art histories say a great deal about. What survives of him in wide circulation comes down to a small handful of pictures, that judgement scene and the quieter The Storyteller among them, which is a slim legacy for a painter who trained under three of the better known teachers of his day.

Wagrez studied under Henri Lehmann, alongside Isidore Pils and Eugène Lenepveu.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jacques Clement Wagrez art prints are easy to find.
