Waterhouse, John William

John William Waterhouse painted women who seem caught in the middle of a story rather than posed for a picture, and that quiet sense of a moment about to turn is what carries his work into counted cross stitch so well.

He was an English painter, born in 1849 and died in 1917. His early work followed the Academic style, but he is remembered for what came after, when he took up the subjects and manner of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Greek mythology, Arthurian legend and Shakespeare gave him most of his figures, very often a single young woman in historical costume. He tried Orientalist and genre subjects too, though women remained the center of nearly everything he made.

Related artists: Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones worked in the same Symbolist vein. John William Godward and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema shared his neo-Pompeian leanings.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, John William Waterhouse art prints are easy to find.
