Charles White drew people the way a person looks when someone has actually studied them, and that steady attention to the human figure is what carries his work into counted cross stitch.
He was an American artist, born in 1918 and died in 1979, and his full name was Charles Wilbert White Jr. Working in paintings, drawings, lithographs and murals, he spent his life chronicling African American subjects, and he stayed with representational form when plenty of his contemporaries moved away from it. That choice mattered. The triumphs and the struggles of his community were what he wanted visible, and he made them visible in faces and hands rather than in abstraction. Associated with the Harlem Renaissance, White is now counted among the best known figures in African American art history.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Charles White art prints are easy to find.
