Edward Charles Williams painted the English countryside at rest, rivers and old roadside inns and the light going soft at the end of the day, and that stillness is what carries so well into counted cross stitch.
He was English, born in 1807 and died in 1881, and he worked as a landscape painter through the Victorian era. He also belonged to one of the busiest artistic households of the century: the Williams family of painters, where landscape work ran through more than one generation. Pictures such as Tranquility and An Old Roadside Inn are the ones his name is still attached to, and they show where his interest lay. Beyond the paintings themselves, he is not a name the art histories say a great deal about.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Robert S Duncanson and Andreas Achenbach.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Edward Charles Williams art prints are easy to find.
