William Clarke Wontner painted the same thing over and over — a single woman, turned slightly, looking past the viewer rather than at them — and that steady focus on one face is what makes his work sit so well in counted cross stitch.
He was English, born in 1857 and died in 1930, and he spent his working life on portraits. Academic Classicism and Romanticism shaped what he did, and he is grouped with the Orientalist painters of his day. The pictures people still know him by carry names like Esme and Cyrene, single figures given a title instead of a story. Much of his output is simply listed as a portrait of a lady, which tells you how consistent he was.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Ford Madox Brown, Charles Landelle, Auguste Toulmouche, and George Frederick Watts.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, William Clarke Wontner art prints are easy to find.
