Robert Zund is best known for The Road to Emmaus, a quiet landscape with two travelers and a stranger walking under the trees, and it is that stillness that carries so well into counted cross stitch.
Zund was a Swiss landscape painter, born in 1827 and died in 1909. He trained first with Jakob Schwegler, then with two of the great names of Swiss scenery painting, and he spent his working life on the woods, fields and light of his own country. The Emmaus picture is the one that traveled furthest. It is a religious subject handled as a landscape, the figures small against the trees, and it has been reproduced and hung in homes and churches ever since.
Zund studied under Alexandre Calame.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Gemalde von Robert Zund art prints are easy to find.
