This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern entitled Beatrice designed from a painting by Marie Spartali Stillman shows a thoughtful young woman resting her chin on her hand beside an open book under blooming roses. The subject in the painting is Beatrice Portinari, the legendary muse of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Born in Florence in 1266, she served as the primary inspiration for Dante's La Vita Nuova and as his guide through paradise in the Divine Comedy. Marie Spartali Stillman depicted Beatrice not as an abstract celestial figure, but as an earthly, educated woman lost in quiet reflection over a book.  Our patterns use only full cross stitches. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
