Jan Brueghel the Elder filled his paintings with animals, flowers and foliage packed edge to edge, and that density of detail is what makes them such rewarding counted cross stitch subjects.
He was a Flemish painter, born in 1568 and died in 1625, and he carried one of the most famous names in European art. His father was Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his older brother was Pieter Brueghel the Younger, yet Jan built a reputation entirely his own. He painted landscapes, still life, scenes of daily life and biblical subjects such as the animals entering Noah's Ark and the Garden of Eden. Peter Paul Rubens was a close friend, and the two collaborated often; between them they led Flemish Baroque painting through the first three decades of the seventeenth century.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jan Brueghel the Elder art prints are easy to find.
