Pierre Carrier-Belleuse kept returning to dancers, and those quiet backstage moments away from the stage are what make his work such a natural fit for counted cross stitch.
He was a French painter, born in 1851 and died in 1932, trained in the academic manner and remembered above all for ballet subjects. One of his best known canvases shows dancers in the greenroom in 1893, passing the time with a game of osselets rather than performing for anyone. Other works turned toward allegory and figure studies, but the theater stayed close to the center of his output. Later in life his name became linked with the Wissant school on the northern French coast.
Carrier-Belleuse studied under Alexandre Cabanel.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Pierre Carrier-Belleuse art prints are easy to find.
