Theodore Chasseriau was fifteen when his portrait of Prosper Marilhat made him the youngest painter shown at the Louvre, and that early confidence carries through to the paintings behind these counted cross stitch patterns.
Born in 1819 and died in 1856, he was a French Romantic painter of Dominican birth whose work covers portraits, history and religious subjects, allegorical murals, and the Orientalist scenes that came out of his travels in Algeria. He began close to the Neoclassical manner of his teacher, then moved toward Romanticism. Drawing stayed at the center of everything he did, and he produced a suite of prints for Shakespeare's Othello.
Chasseriau studied under Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, whose Romantic contemporaries also included Eugene Delacroix, Gustave Dore, and Ivan Aivazovsky.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Theodore Chasseriau art prints are easy to find.
