Claus, Emile

Emile Claus worked in Luminism, the kind of painting built on light itself, and that is the quality most stitchers are chasing when they turn one of his canvases into counted cross stitch.

He was Belgian, born in 1849 and died in 1924, and he trained under the marine painter Jacob Jacobs. His name sits in two places at once in the art histories: with the French Realists, who wanted the world painted as it actually looked, and with the Luminists, who pushed that same honesty toward brightness. Claus never quite settled into one camp, which is part of why he is still worth looking at. The Realist grounding stayed with him even as his work grew lighter.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Frederic Edwin Church, Grigoriy Myasoyedov, and August Plinke.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Emile Claus art prints are easy to find.
