Corcos, Vittorio Matteo

Vittorio Matteo Corcos painted young people caught doing very little at all, and that quiet quality is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.

He was an Italian painter, born in 1859 and died in 1933, and portraiture was the work that made his name. Alongside the commissioned faces sit his genre paintings, where winsome and finely dressed men and women lean back in moments of rest or recreation rather than posing for posterity. It is an unhurried kind of picture, and it suited him. His training came from Enrico Pollastrini, Domenico Morelli and Giuseppe Ciaranfi in Italy, then later from Leon Bonnat.

Corcos studied under Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat, a portrait painter himself.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Vittorio Matteo Corcos art prints are easy to find.
