Edwin Deakin painted crumbling Spanish colonial missions at a time when almost nobody was looking at them, and that mix of architecture and romance makes his work a natural fit for counted cross stitch.
A British-American artist, Deakin was born in 1838 and died in 1923. He is remembered above all for those mission studies, which were widely publicized and helped convince the public that the buildings were worth saving. Alongside them came romantic landscape painting, and still lifes that are counted among the finest of the genre. He was also one of the painters who brought scenes of San Francisco's Chinatown to a wider audience.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Cornelis Springer, Arnold Bocklin, and Carl Frederik Aagaard.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Edwin Deakin art prints are easy to find.
