Edouard Louis Dubufe spent his career painting people rather than places, and a face held that steadily is the kind of subject counted cross stitch was made for.
He was French, born in 1819 and died in 1883, and portraiture was the whole of his working life. Painting ran in the family before it ran in him, since his training came from his father, Claude-Marie Dubufe. Portraits of this sort carried a practical weight in 19th century France, and Dubufe made his living from sitters who wanted to be seen clearly. Madame Louis Pommery, painted in 1875, is among the works of his that people still recognize by name.
Dubufe in turn taught Guillaume Dubufe, who also painted portraits, making three generations of the same family at the same trade.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Edouard Louis Dubufe art prints are easy to find.
