Asher Brown Durand spent his working life looking hard at American trees and rocks, and that patient attention to landscape is what carries his paintings over into counted cross stitch.
Born in 1796 and died in 1886, Durand was an American engraver before he was a painter, and the discipline of cutting a plate never quite left him. He belongs to the Hudson River School, the group of artists who decided that the woods and valleys of their own country were worth painting on a grand scale. Landscape was his subject almost entirely, and it is the work he is still remembered for.
Thomas Cole, Martin Johnson Heade, Robert S Duncanson, and William Sidney Mount were fellow Hudson River School painters.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Asher Brown Durand art prints are easy to find.
