Fragonard, Jean-Honore

Jean-Honore Fragonard painted swings, shepherdesses and girls lost in a book, and that mix of playfulness and quiet makes him a natural fit for counted cross stitch.

Fragonard was French, born in 1732 and died in 1806, and he worked through the last decades of the old order with astonishing speed. More than 550 paintings are attributed to him, yet only five carry a date, which tells you something about how he worked: quickly, constantly, and with little interest in bookkeeping. He is best remembered for genre scenes full of intimacy and veiled eroticism, though he painted portraits and landscapes too. The Swing remains the picture most people know him by.

Fragonard studied under Francois Boucher. Thomas Gainsborough, Alexander Roslin and Giovanni Antonio Canaletto were fellow Rococo painters.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jean-Honore Fragonard art prints are easy to find.
