Arthur Hughes returned to Shakespeare's drowning Ophelia more than once across his career, and that kind of patient attention to a single figure is what makes his paintings sit so well in counted cross stitch.
He was an English painter and illustrator, born in 1832 and died in 1915, and his name belongs to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His first Ophelia dates from 1852, when he was barely twenty; he came back to her again in the early 1860s with Ophelia and He Will Not Come Again. Literary subjects run through much of what he made, alongside quieter domestic scenes such as The Property Room. Illustration work sat beside the painting rather than behind it, which was true of several artists in that circle.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Albert Lynch, Giulio Rosati, Theodore Chasseriau, and Albert Aublet.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Arthur Hughes art prints are easy to find.
