This is a classic story from Greek mythology that serves as the ultimate catalyst for the Trojan War. The story begins at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, where Eris, the goddess of discord, was intentionally left off the guest list. In retaliation, she crashed the celebration and threw a golden apple inscribed "to the fairest" into the crowd. Three major goddesses—Hera (queen of the gods), Athena (goddess of wisdom and war), and Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty)—immediately claimed the apple for themselves. Unwilling to make such a dangerous decision, Zeus assigned the task to Paris, a mortal prince of Troy who was living as a shepherd. To win his vote, each goddess offered Paris an extraordinary bribe: Hera offered political power and control over all of Asia and Europe. Athena offered supreme wisdom, tactical skill, and victory in battle. Aphrodite offered the hand of the most beautiful mortal woman in the world, Helen of Sparta. Paris chose Aphrodite and awarded her the golden apple. He then traveled to Sparta to claim his reward, abducting Helen (who was already married to King Menelaus of Sparta). This act launched a thousand Greek ships to retrieve her, igniting the legendary Trojan War. Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
