Laszlo, Philip Alexius de

Philip Alexius de Laszlo spent his working life painting the faces of royalty and the aristocracy, and those portraits carry over into counted cross stitch with all their quiet dignity intact.

He was an Anglo-Hungarian painter, born in 1869 and died in 1937, and the portrait was his whole career. The people who sat for him were kings, countesses and the well connected, and his own life ended up entangled with theirs. Edward VII invested him with the Royal Victorian Order in 1909, and three years later Franz Joseph I of Austria ennobled him, making him part of the Hungarian nobility. He had married the Anglo-Irish socialite Lucy Guinness in 1900 and became a British subject in 1914. Not every sitter was titled, though. Some of the warmest work is the family portraiture, including a painting of his own son.

Other nineteenth-century painters: John Singer Sargent, Thomas Francis Dicksee, and Sir Samuel Luke Fildes.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Philip Alexius de Laszlo art prints are easy to find.
