Leader, Benjamin Williams

Benjamin Williams Leader painted the English countryside as a place people actually lived and walked through, which is why his river banks and cottage lanes hold up so well in counted cross stitch.

He was British, born in 1831 and died in 1923, and landscape was his whole working life. Rivers and streams turn up again and again in his titles, along with cottages, wet evenings after rain and the road home at the end of the day. He worked in Wales as readily as in his native England, and he was still painting well into the twentieth century, long after the fashions of his youth had moved on. Ninety-two years is a long time to look at the same fields and keep finding something in them.

Other nineteenth-century painters: George Inness, William Trost Richards, and Jasper Francis Cropsey.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Benjamin Williams Leader art prints are easy to find.
