This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern entitled Maximilian, Duke of Leuchtenberg was designed from a painting by Joseph Karl Stieler. Maximilian de Beauharnais, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg, was born in Munich in 1817 as the son of Eugène de Beauharnais and step-grandson of Napoleon Bonaparte. Painted in his youth by court artist Joseph Karl Stieler, he grew up to marry Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna of Russia, the daughter of Tsar Nicholas I. A patron of science, business, and the arts, he served as president of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and became an industrialist who helped establish Russia's first locomotive manufacturing works. The portrait shows a young prince dressed in a vibrant red velvet suit with gold embroidery, holding a ceremonial sword beside an ornate chair. Our patterns use only full cross stitches. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
