Munier, Emile

Emile Munier painted children and their animals with a tenderness that survives being worked thread by thread, which is why his portraits have such a following in counted cross stitch.

He was a French academic painter, born in 1840 and died in 1895, trained first under Abel François Lucas and later drawn into the orbit of William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Portraiture is where he is remembered, though the pictures people know best are the quieter domestic ones: a girl sharing her breakfast with kittens, a barefoot goose girl, a small face looking straight out at the viewer. Marie-Louise, painted in 1880, is among the most reproduced of them.

Munier was influenced by William Adolphe Bouguereau, who worked in much the same vein.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Emile Munier art prints are easy to find.
