North, Marianne

Marianne North painted plants where they actually grew, tangled up with the trees and the weather around them, and that sense of a living thing rather than a pressed specimen is what carries her work into counted cross stitch.

She was English, born in 1830 and died in 1890, and she came to painting as a biologist as much as an artist. Orchids, a Darjeeling oak wrapped in a climber, Brazilian branches loaded with epiphytes: North traveled a very long way to stand in front of these things and record them. Her floral and landscape work is really one subject, since she rarely separated a flower from its place. She is remembered too for the plants she discovered and for the gallery she created at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which still holds her paintings.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Thomas Edwin Mostyn, Adolf Kaufmann, Edward Wilkins Waite, and Grigoriy Myasoyedov.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Marianne North art prints are easy to find.
