Henri Pierre Picou spent his career on goddesses, allegories and the old stories, and that appetite for mythological subject matter is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.
Picou was a French painter, born in 1824 and died in 1895. He began with portraits and classical historical subjects before turning toward allegory and mythology, the seasons and the figures of religious painting. His work sits with the Neo-Grec painters, though the later pictures lean into Symbolism. Little of his life is loudly recorded, but the paintings themselves have stayed in circulation, reproduced again and again long after the man was forgotten.
Picou studied under Paul Delaroche, and Jean-Leon Gerome was a fellow Neo-Grec painter. Henri Fantin-Latour and Gustave Dore worked in the same Symbolist current.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Henri Pierre Picou art prints are easy to find.
