Poynter, Sir Edward John

Sir Edward John Poynter went looking for his subjects in myth and ancient story, and figures like the storm nymphs in their cave or Erato with her lyre carry over into counted cross stitch with all their drama intact.

He was an English painter, designer, and draughtsman, born in 1836 and died in 1919. History painting was his territory, and the titles alone give away where his imagination lived: muses, sea caves, a Roman poet's sparrow. Poynter trained under Charles Gleyre, was made a baronet, and rose to serve as President of the Royal Academy, which put him at the head of the British art establishment rather than at its edges. That standing came from draughtsmanship as much as from subject matter, since he was as much a designer as a picture-maker.

Poynter taught John Collier, who worked in the same history painting tradition.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Sir Edward John Poynter art prints are easy to find.
