Joseph Vernet spent his working life painting water, weather and the ships caught between them, and that drama carries straight over into counted cross stitch.
He was born in Avignon in 1714 and died in 1789, a French painter and engraver who trained under Adrien Manglard and Bernardino Fergioni. Marine subjects made his name. Harbors at sunset, seaports under moonlight, and the shipwreck scenes he returned to again and again are the works still reproduced today, though his landscape painting has kept its following too. Painting ran in the family as well, since his son Carle Vernet and his daughter Marguerite Émilie Chalgrin both took it up.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Joseph Vernet art prints are easy to find.
