John Singleton Copley painted faces that hold a viewer's attention rather than simply filling a frame, and that steadiness is what carries his portraits into counted cross stitch.
John Singleton Copley was an American-born British painter, born in 1738 and died in 1815. He came up in Boston and built a career painting the wealthy families of colonial New England before leaving for London in 1774, and he never went back. The move paid off for about twenty years. Alongside portraits he took on large history paintings, and the striking thing about them is that he was willing to paint modern events in modern dress at a time when that was not the usual choice. His last years went badly, and he died deep in debt.
James Tissot and Gemalde von Albert Anker were fellow realists working in much the same vein.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, John Singleton Copley art prints are easy to find.
