David, Jacques-Louis

Jacques-Louis David built his paintings around a single charged moment, a clarity of gesture and outline that carries over well into counted cross stitch.

David was a French painter, born in 1748 and died in 1825, and he trained under Joseph-Marie Vien. He worked in history painting, portraiture, and allegory, and by the 1780s his severe, thought-out canvases had pushed taste away from Rococo lightness toward something colder and far more serious. Pictures like The Death of Socrates and Oath of the Horatii made his reputation; Napoleon Crossing the Alps and The Coronation of Napoleon tied him to the most famous man in Europe. He is generally counted the leading painter of the Neoclassical era.

David taught Marie Guillemine Benoist, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, and Francois Pascal Simon Gerard. Sir Joshua Reynolds was another painter of the Neoclassical period.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jacques-Louis David art prints are easy to find.
