Anchise Picchi worked as a painter for the better part of a century, and that long, steady looking is what carries his pictures over into counted cross stitch.
He was Italian, born in 1911 and died in 2007, which means his life spanned two world wars and everything that came after them in Italian art. He is not a name the art histories say a great deal about, and there is something honest in that. A painter who kept painting, quietly, while louder reputations came and went around him. The work is what remains, and it is worth sitting with.
