Smith, Jessie Willcox

Jessie Willcox Smith put children at the center of the picture rather than off at the edges of it, and that directness is what carries her work into counted cross stitch so well.

She was an American illustrator, born in 1863 and died in 1935, who studied under Howard Pyle and worked through what became known as the Golden Age of American illustration. Called "one of the greatest pure illustrators", she supplied stories and articles to Century, Harper's, Scribners and the Ladies' Home Journal, though it is her long association with Good Housekeeping that most people remember. Every cover from December 1917 to 1933 was hers, alongside a Mother Goose series that ran for years. She also illustrated more than sixty books, among them Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, Longfellow's Evangeline, and Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Marie Wunsch, Emile Vernon, and Sophie Anderson.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jessie Willcox Smith art prints are easy to find.
